MOULIN ROUGE DANCERS
Moulin Rouge dancers are elite, internationally recruited athletes, primarily female, who are required to have extensive classical ballet training and meet strict height minimums (at least
1.75m1.75 m1.75𝑚 for women and
1.85m1.85 m1.85𝑚 for men). Their demanding daily routine includes rigorous training and rehearsals to maintain their physique and perfect performances, which feature elaborate costumes and demanding choreography like the high-kicking French Cancan. They are known as the Doriss Girls and are recognized for their athletic skill, grace, and glamour.Â
Selection and requirementsÂ
- International recruitment: Dancers are recruited from all over the world, with Australia, Great Britain, and France being prominent origins.
- Height and physique: Female dancers must be at least
1.75m1.75 m1.75𝑚 (
5′8"5 prime 8 "5′8") and males
1.85m1.85 m1.85𝑚 (
6′3"6 prime 3 "6′3"). Their figures are carefully monitored for aesthetic reasons.
- Training: A strong background in classical ballet is mandatory for all dancers.
- Auditions: Openings are competitive, with up to 80 potential candidates for a single audition.Â
Demanding lifestyleÂ
- Daily routine: Their schedule is similar to that of top athletes, involving rehearsals, warm-ups, and daily training to maintain peak physical condition.
- Fitness: Dancers use the Moulin Rouge's fitness facilities and continue dance classes to remain in top form.
- Performances: They perform two shows per night, dancing for about four hours in total.
- Costumes: The elaborate costumes require assistance from dressers for extremely quick changes, sometimes with only a two-minute window between numbers.Â
