Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, is set in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. At the heart of the old city’s mazelike alleys is Durbar Square, which becomes frenetic during Indra Jatra, a religious festival featuring masked dances
Pokhara is a city on Phewa Lake, in central Nepal. It’s known as a gateway to the Annapurna Circuit, a popular trail in the Himalayas. Tal Barahi Temple, a 2-story pagoda, sits on an island in the lake.
The best months to visit Kathmandu are October, November, and December. During this time, the weather is pleasant with clear skies and comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring the city and enjoying the mountain views.
Pashupatinath Temple
The largest temple complex in Nepal, it stretches on both sides of the Bagmati River which is considered holy by Hindus. The main pagoda style temple has a gilded roof, four sides covered in silver, and wood carvings of the finest quality. Temples dedicated to several other Hindu and Buddhist deities surround the temple of Pashupatinath. Pashupatinath is also one of the very few living cultural heritage sites in the world.
Boudhanath Stupa
Boudhanath Stupa is considered to be one of the oldest and biggest Buddhist monuments in Nepal. The impressive structure stands at a height of 36 meters. In 1979, it became an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Great Stupa of Boudhanath is the focal point of the district. There are at least 29 Tibetan Gompas (Monasteries & Nunneries) around Boudhanath. Situated on a three level Mandala style platform, the Stupa is visited by millions of devotees. An interesting legend surrounds this enthralling structure.
Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple)
It’s also called the “Monkey Temple” by the locals (as it’s thronged by monkeys all the time!) is a fascinating destination – a perfect ambigature of Hindu and Buddhist ideologies. There is a mythology attached with this temple, which has its own combinations! But the fact is once the entire area of the temple was filled with water. It is in this water that Lotus grew. And thus came out the name Self Created” or Swayambhu! It has been taken from the eternal flame of Hindus over which a STUPA was built. And thus what we see today is the huge massive Nepal architecture called Swayambhunath Temple.
Bindhyabasini Temple
The Bindhyabasini Temple or Bindhya Basini Temple looks like a small white hut, however there are other temples scattered inside the boundary. Situated on a small hillock with a beautiful view of the massive Annapurna ranges. The Bindhya Basini temple is dedicated to the goddess Bhagwati, known as the guardian deity of Pokhara. Known as the blood-thirsty goddess there have been sacrifices of animals made to please the goddess, which accounts for some gruesome sights for an average non-violent person. The temple is 3000ft above sea level and as mentioned earlier sits on a hillock therefore devotees have a flight of stairs to climb from the road till the temple. The slope right beside the temple has a couple of café’s and shops where you can find souvenirs of the temple and offerings to be made inside the temple. This beautifully located temple holds quite an importance for the Hindu’s in the area, hence some code of conduct is to be followed while entering the temple. Its best recommended if a spiritual time is what you are looking for.
Davi's Fall
Devi’s fall also known as Patale Chhango, this waterfall marks the point where the Pardi Khola stream vanishes underground. When the stream is at full bore after monsoon rains, the sound of the water plunging over the falls is deafening. The falls are about 2km southwest of the airport on the road to Butwal, just before the Tashi Ling Tibetan camp.
Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave
The Gupteshwor Mahadev cave is Nepal's most famous cave. It is located close to Davi’s fall in Pokhara. It's rumored to be the longest cave in Nepal (2950 meters). The Cave is considered 599 years old. While the young local people went deeper, they found out that an idol-like object resembling Lord Shiva had formed naturally on the spot. Later on, it was taken to be Lord Shiva and the local people formally consecrated and installed it at the mouth of the cave in 1992. The cave is musty and damp but a string of electric light bulbs emits enough light to see the stairs clearly. Most of the time one needs to bend down until one has passed through the 50 meters long tunnel. Once one has passed through the tunnel, there is a huge open cavern with enormous rocks, no trace of soil at all, only little pebbles scattered everywhere. On the right hand side there is a deep gorge. After a few yards of scrambling through the darkness, there is a crystal clear pond and from here one can see the awe-inspiring falling right from the top.
